Although there are deeply rooted traditional beliefs that restrict new mothers who are undergoing confinement from certain food, these practices are passed on from mothers throughout generations and applied into confinement practices to promote the recovery and development of both mothers and their children.

 

For South-east Asian practices from groups such as the Chinese, Malay & Indian practices, the dietary requirements include food that is able to purge our “wind” from the body after delivery and to promote greater blood circulation. Some of this traditional food also promotes the production of milk in mothers. However, one general understanding from both Ayurvedic practices and Traditional Chinese Medicine is that since the female body is “cool” after giving birth, mothers are required to eat heaty foods to ensure that their body is regulated to a normal temperature.

 

One of these traditional beliefs is to ensure the mother gets plenty of dishes that will “warm” the body including the use of ginger and traditional herbs. “cooling” foods such as cucumber, cabbage and pineapples should be avoided according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, for western medicine, they focus more on the nutrients gained from the food eaten by mothers which can be transferred to the baby through breastfeeding. High Fiber

Mothers at the post-natal stage may experience constipation. To counter the effects of constipation, meals are usually high in fiber which may include various fruits and vegetables (which also contain vitamins and mineral) so that it will relieve new mothers of these symptoms. There are also various other alternatives that include whole-grain cereals, bread and even brown rice that can help.

Plenty of Liquids

 

Fluids is an important part of a new mother’s diet as it is a necessity for mothers who are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding will incur a loss of an average 700mL of liquid per day from the mother’s body. Therefore, it is important for mothers to have a constant intake of liquid to replace the loss fluids. Similar to fiber, liquid can also help in relieving new mothers from the symptoms of constipation.

 

Fat, Carbohydrates & Protein

 

These nutrients are an essential part of postpartum recovery for the growth and repair of the body. The body will need all of the above nutrients to promote the growth and repair of the body. These nutrients can also be passed to the child through breastfeeding to promote well-rounded growth.

 

Iron

 

Iron is a nutrient which is needed for the production of blood cells. As there are a lot of blood loss during pregnancy and delivery, red meat and poultry should be considered as a source of iron to supplement these losses. However, for vegan diets, tofu and beans are alternatives that can be used.

 

Calcium

 

Taking care of one’s bone health is especially important during breastfeeding. Calcium is one of the key nutrients needed for a baby’s growth and will be drawn from the mother’s breast milk. During this phase, women may lose bone mass due to the lack of estrogen (a hormone which protects the bone) which puts women at this stage to have a risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, at this stage, mothers should have supplements for calcium through low-fat dairy products and vegetables. Mothers are also encouraged to exercise through light activities such as yoga to strengthen their bones.

 

Things to avoid for Mothers (Especially breastfeeding)

 

All mothers are encouraged to avoid various foodstuff including alcohol, caffeine. One of the main reasons behind avoiding these item includes the fact that all nutrients and toxins can be transferred to the baby during breastfeeding. Alcohol and caffeine will inhibit the development of the brain of the child and it may also contribute to a lot of health issues during adolescence and later life.
